February is Black History Month, and it’s being celebrated and appreciated across our country in so many unique ways. It’s also being honored in some pretty adorable ways. Southwest Ohio Parent had the pleasure of speaking to Adrian Handwork, local mom of three, and we’re so excited to share their diversity book drive!
About the Book Drive:
We are asking for people to donate stories featuring diverse people of all colors, cultures, and backgrounds in an effort to spread love, diversity, and inclusion.
We started asking for donations on January 15, Martin Luther King’s birthday, within a week we received more than 40 books. We will distribute these books at our local children’s hospital and schools in our community.
How We Will Distribute the Books:
Due to restrictions because of COVID-19 we are not allowed to pass the books out directly to each child, but we will drop them off at the various locations with the coordinator.
Where to Donate:
My daughters and I created a wishlist of books on Amazon for people to choose from here that will send the books directly to us. Or if people have books they would like to send they can mail them to:

People can definitely donate books that are not on the wishlist as long as they are new and racially inclusive.
About Us:
I am Adrian Handwork, a stay at home mother to three girls. I create crafts, activities, and adventures for my children at home and share them on my Instagram page @curlsandkids. After the events of last summer I wanted to make sure I was doing my part as a mom to raise children that respect others who are different from them. So I started doing diversity crafts at home and sharing them with parents to encourage our little ones to embrace diversity.
Parents have been so receptive to these crafts and I get the sweetest comments and messages from families saying the diversity crafts help them tremendously. I truly believe we can change the world by starting at home with our children.
I wanted to do something outside of social media to help continue to spread love, diversity, and inclusion in my community. And coincidentally my daughters, Aria (4) and Ava (3) have a friend in Indiana that started a book drive in her community. They were inspired by her and wanted to do a book drive too for kids here in Dayton. Books are such a great way to spread the message of diversity and inclusion.
They are so excited to distribute the books to kids, especially since the majority of these books are their favorites to read. They get so excited every time we get a book in the mail. Our mission simply is to spread diversity and love for all people, one book at a time.
