The SkyStar Wheel is leaving Cincinnati – but a bigger Wheel is on its way

The SkyStar Wheel is leaving Cincinnati – but a bigger Wheel is on its way.

This week, it was reported that the SkyStar Wheel — which has become a defining fixture at The Banks — will close March 2. However, a bigger and better SkyStar Wheel is in the works.

Hamilton County officials revealed the current SkyStar Wheel will close March 2 in order to make way for the larger, more permanent wheel at The Banks. The new SkyStar Wheel will have a 20-year contract with Hamilton County: Ten years will be its operating term, with two additional five-year renewal options.

The new SkyStar Wheel will be 180 feet high with a spokeless design, making it the first of its kind in the US. (Cincinnati’s current SkyStar Wheel is 150 feet tall with traditional steel spokes.)

The SkyStar Wheel arrived in Cincinnati in 2018 on a temporary basis, and ended up extending its stay in the Queen City. Cincinnati’s current SkyStar Wheel will be packed up and shipped to San Francisco in March for Golden Gate Park’s 150th anniversary.

Manufacturing, shipping and assembly of the new SkyStar Wheel is expected to take nine months. The new SkyStar Wheel is expected to open next year.
