Q&A with Springer School and Center:

What makes Springer School and Center unique?

Springer offers the only day school for students with learning disabilities in the tri-state area and is one of only three in the state of Ohio. For nearly 50 years, we have been committed to serving students with significant struggles in reading, mathematics, and writing. We recognize that many students diagnosed with a learning disability also struggle with organization and attention. Our academic program has been developed to address the needs of these students in order to best position them for a successful future.

What is Springer School and Center’s age/grade range?

Springer serves students in grades 1 – 8.

What is your enrollment policy? Are there any key dates parents should be aware of?

We accept students between the ages of 6 and 12 with an average or above-average intellectual ability whose performance in school does not match their ability. The application process includes submission of a recent intelligence assessment and other educational, psychological, speech and language evaluations, and an admissions meeting and tour of the building. The admission process can begin at any time throughout the year.

Do you offer financial assistance?

Yes, more than $1 million in financial aid was awarded last year. Forty-eight percent of our students receive financial aid from Springer, awards averaging $11,000. Springer is also a provider for the Jon Peterson Special Needs Scholarship for Ohio residents. Families that qualify for both scholarships can expect to be responsible for approximately 20 percent of tuition.

What are the standard school day hours?

Springer’s school day begins at 8:00 am and ends at 3:00 pm.

Does Springer School and Center offer before/after school care? Does Springer School and Center offer afterschool activities?

Springer does not offer before and after school care. Throughout the year, we offer a variety of after-school programs in art, music, movement and sports.

Does Springer School and Center have a homework policy?

We believe homework must be developmentally appropriate, build on previous instruction and practice, expand the student’s thinking about the subject, and provide for different ways to experience important information, foster responsibility, and create a quality product of which the student can be proud.

Does Springer School and Center offer support for students with special needs?

Every student at Springer receives an academic and social/emotional program designed to meet their unique needs. Psychological services, speech/language therapy and occupational therapy are provided to those students who need them.

What specialty classes / extracurricular activities does Springer School and Center offer (gym, art, language, sports etc.)?

Annually, Springer hosts an Artist in Residence and Musician in Residence, as well as a Visiting Author. Recently, Springer introduced an Actor in Residence program. Each October, Be Your Best Self Week encourages students to care for their physical, mental and emotional selves. Throughout the year, Springer offers a variety of after-school programs in art, music, movement and sports.

What are Springer School and Center’s safety policies?

Springer has detailed protocols in place for fire, bomb threat, tornado, intruder and hazardous material leak. These protocols are practiced with the student body several times a year. A designated “first responder” team from among faculty and staff receives annual training in CPR and first aid. The entire staff is trained annually to respond to injuries with blood-borne pathogens in mind. All doors are kept locked, with the main entrance controlled by a receptionist from the front desk.
