Songs Parents Can Relate To

There’s a great song on the new Zac Brown Band album about being a dad (I’ll Be Your Man). After listening to it I started thinking about some other songs I liked that had to do with being a dad/parenting.

Here’s what I came up with…

Darius Rucker- It Won’t Be Like This for Long

“It wont be like this for long

One day soon we’ll look back laugh’n

At the week we brought her home

This phase is gonna fly by

So baby just hold on

It wont be like this for long”

There’s also a few great, completely relatable lines in that song, about the dreaded preschool drop off.

Harry Chapin- Cat’s In The Cradle

Probably one of the most well-known father/son relationship songs, about a dad that’s too busy to spend time with his son.

“My son turned ten just the other day

He said, “Thanks for the ball, Dad, come on let’s play

can you teach me to throw,” I said “Not today

I got a lot to do,” he said, “That’s ok

And he walked away but his smile never dimmed

And said, “I’m gonna be like him, yeah

You know I’m gonna be like him”

John Lennon- Watching the Wheels

A song that makes perfect sense, once you realize it was written by John during his days as a stay-at-home dad, or as he would say, “househusband.”

“I’m just sitting here watching the wheels go round and round,

I really love to watch them roll,

No longer riding on the merry-go-round,

I just had to let it go.”

Ben Folds- Still Fighting It

A great/funny/sad/sweet song about growing up by Ben Folds.

Good morning, son

In twenty years from now

Maybe we’ll both sit down and have a few beers

And I can tell you ‘bout today

And how I picked you up and everything changed”

Cat Stevens- Father and Son

I love that Cat Stevens sang the father and the son parts of this song using two different voices.

“I was once like you are now, and I know that it’s not easy,

To be calm when you’ve found something going on.

But take your time, think a lot,

Why, think of everything you’ve got.

For you will still be here tomorrow, but your dreams may not.”

I’m sure there are dozens more songs you could add to this list. These were just a few I’d heard recently and thought they all showed some unique perspective on parenting.

Are there any favorite songs you have that people have written for their kids or are about being a parent? If so, please leave them in the comments below.
