My kids are animal obsessed, and I’m always looking for fun ways to foster their love of nature. Located in Oxford, Nation Road Horse Rental offers a variety of family-friendly equine expeditions. A visit to Nation Road Horse Rental is an utterly delightful experience that will make your family fall head over heels for horses — and beautiful Butler County.
Nation Road Horse Rental is a must-visit destination this fall for a unique and memorable family experience.
This family-run farm is the real deal. Owned and operated by Judy Sheard, this farm has been in her husband William’s family for four generations, and it’s absolutely gorgeous. There’s an original, one-room schoolhouse on the grounds that William’s grandfather attended. This place is so charming, you’ll never want to leave. The horses — many of which are rescues — are the happiest and friendliest you’ll ever meet. They are all highly trained, well cared-for and very personable.
On a picture-perfect fall Saturday, my husband took my older two out on a 30-minute trail ride. It was a first for all three of them. The horses that were picked for Julian and Mary to ride, Sam and Spud, were wonderful and made my kids’ first trail ride experience a breeze.
For younger kids, Nation Road offers parent-assisted pony rides. These rides take younger kids on a smaller loop around the farm’s grounds, and are a gentle and accessible option for families. All kids are required to wear a helmet, and the staff made sure my kids were all safely and securely positioned on their animals. We felt as if we were part of Judy’s family, the way she so thoughtfully took care of us.
As a child, Judy dreamed of owning her own horses, but these majestic animals are expensive and truly a labor of love. Now as an adult, with her newly retired husband by her side, Judy’s dreams have come true in Nation Road Horse Rental. As a mother and grandmother, Judy has created a warm and welcoming place for families to experience the wonder of horseback riding. We had the most delightful time at Nation Road, and will most definitely be back for another afternoon of unplugged, quality family time.
