Here in Cincinnati, we are so lucky to have the eponymous Museum Center. This Ohio museum truly puts you there, whether it’s beside Neil Armstrong on the Moon, in the rainforests harvesting cacao beans or deep underground exploring the Earth’s cavernous underworld. This summer, the Cincinnati Museum Center (CMC) invites Cincinnatians to explore ancient Mayan culture in Maya: The Exhibition.
Featuring over 300 artifacts, this exhibit shows how Mayan culture lives on today. Maya: The Exhibition is open at CMC and is a must-visit experience.
Maya: The Exhibition was originally set to open this spring, but was postponed due to COVID-19. After a nearly four-month closure, CMC reopened to the public July 17. Among the steps CMC is taking to keep its guests and staff safe, is instituting timed tickets for both general museum admission and featured exhibitions like Maya: The Exhibition. Timed tickets will help manage the number of people in each museum, ensuring proper social distancing of six feet or more.
In addition, extensive cleaning protocols will ensure the building is clean and sanitized multiple times per day, including particular attention to high touchpoint areas like doors, elevators, handrails, countertops and restrooms. For the safety of guests and colleagues, masks will be worn by CMC staff at all times and they are asking all guests to please do the same. Additionally, signage and floor markings will encourage guests to abide by the six-foot social distancing recommended by health officials.
But back to Maya: The Exhibit.
The Mayans are responsible for so many modern conveniences we use daily: the calendar, the number zero, rubber balls and even chocolate! Theirs was a civilization of innovators, astronomers, mathematicians, inventors and gods. This exhibit shows just how much this ancient culture has contributed to modern life, and is a wonderful way to sneak in a little history lesson this summer.
While it’s an add-on experience, Member children get in free to Maya: The Exhibition with the purchase of an adult ticket to Maya: The Exhibition. (Also, admission for children 2 and under is free.)
