Gorman Heritage Farm

Tucked away in the Village of Evendale, is one of the great gems of the Cincinnati metro area, Gorman Heritage Farm.

Formerly a family run farm, today Gorman is a 122-acre, fully working farm and education center run by staff and volunteers whose mission is “…to educate about agriculture, nutrition, sustainability, and the environment.”

The Children’s Garden, near the entrance to the farm, is always our first stop. There are flowers and plants aplenty to explore. Though I suspect, based on the way the our girls dash to the schoolhouse and digging/planting area, that those might be their favorite parts of the Children’s Garden.

A quick walk up the stroller-friendly trail takes you past the rental gardens (where you can rent a bed and plant/tend your own garden), and leads you up to the barn and farmhouse. There you’ll find goats, pigs, rabbits, chickens, turkeys, horses, mules, sheep, farm cats, cows, and sometimes even a duck or two. On occasion we’ve even seen dogs practicing their sheep-herding skills. So cool!

In addition to the gardens, barns, and trails Gorman offers summer camps, winter preschool programs, tours, cooking classes, and many opportunities to explore and connect with farm life.

The highlight of the year has to be the annual Sunflower Festival. Hayrides, live music, food trucks, pumpkins, and of course a huge sunflower maze. It’s really spectacular. This year the Sunflower Festival takes place on October 7 & 8.

Our family loves Gorman Heritage Farm. Their hands-on, experiential philosophy offers opportunities to discuss nature, ecology, and stewardship in a fun, family friendly environment.
