Family Fun at Great American Ballpark

Some of my best memories from when I was little are going to Reds games with my family. We’d sit in the cheap, nose-bleed seats at old Riverfront Stadium, eat soft-serve sundaes out of those collectable Reds hats, and jump wildly up and down during the 7th inning stretch.

Now as a mom with three kids, I’d like to take my family “out to the ballgame.” We actually went this weekend, on Sunday’s “Family Day,” and it was awesome. Here are 5 reasons why you should take your family down to Great American Ballpark this summer:

1. It’s Affordable!

Every Sunday home game is a Family Day at GABP. Discounted tickets, giveaways, face painting and mascot races make these days the epitome of family friendly.

2. There’s a Playground

When the kids get antsy (which, you know they will), head over to the Kroger Fan Zone. This area features interactive games, a giant slide for kids (and adults) and an impressive playground.

3. You Can “BYO” Lunch

Everyone knows that the food at a baseball game is pricey — with a family, you can easily pay more for food than tickets! At GABP, you can bring a soft-sided cooler, so pack the kids’ lunches to save money!

Tip: Make sure all drinks are sealed! All drinks must be in clear plastic bottles with the safety seal fully intact. Yesterday, we brought juice boxes and had no issues.

4. It’s Baby Friendly

Sometimes you need a quiet place to feed/soothe/calm your baby, so I appreciate GABP’s Pampers Nursing Suite. This area features individual, private rocking chairs for nursing, a private restroom and changing table — making this area perfect for rocking a fussy baby to sleep mid-game (or taking a  persnickety preschooler potty).

There’s also the Reds Rookie Baby Fan Club, which includes a game ticket, hat and admission to an elite, an on-field baby parade. Once kids turn 3, they can then join the Reds Heads, which comes with its own fun gear and exclusive events (autograph signings, Run-the-bases events and more!).

5. It’s Fun

Every little kid loves Joey Votto (or, as Julian used to say, “Doughy” Votto), so come early to watch batting practice and maybe score an autograph! If your kids are older, go to a Friday night game and stay for Fireworks Friday. Take Grandpa to a game on Father’s Day. Learn about Reds history at the Hall of Fame Museum. Order an ice cream sundae in a collector’s hat, or tackle GABP’s infamous nacho helmet as a family!

No matter what, a trip to the ballpark has something for everyone, and is a great way to bond as a family! (Plus, the fan shop sells a Reds-logo pickup truck, so now it’s Julian’s favorite place ever).
