I took Spanish from 7th grade through college, and while I can’t tell you how to ask for the nearest bathroom, I can tell you all about the different Spanish holidays. My favorite was “Day Of The Dead,” or Dia de los Muertos. It’s a Mexican holiday celebrating the lives of family or friends who have died. Instead of being sad and mourning, the Mexicans instead choose to throw huge, happy fiesta! Taking place October 31-November 2 (a span that includes All Saints’ Eve, Day, Souls Day and, of course, Halloween), Dia de los Muertos celebrations include building ceremonial altars to encourage the souls of the beloved deceased to visit.

Brazee Street Studios
We love the themed classes at Brazee — and this week’s offerings don’t disappoint! Celebrate Dia de los Muertos by making your own Sugar beads on October 27 or skulls on October 29. (Sugar skulls are a fun Dia de los Muertos tradition.)
The Library
As always The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County has an array of holiday-themed happenings. Check out Haunted Gingerbread House Making workshop at Symmes Township on October 24, Spooky Storytime at Harrison on the 26th and Halloween Crafts at Pleasant Ridge on October 29.

The Museum Center
On October 27 at 2 p.m., the Museum Center is hosting a Dia de Los Muertos Super Sprouts program! During this one-hour activity, kids 5 and under will learn all about Dia de Los Muertos and create a colorful collage. Class is free with Museum admission.
Dinsmore Homestead
We recently waxed poetic about this Kentucky gem, which pulls out all the spooky stops for its annual All Hallows’ Eve event! On October 29 from 5-8, head to Dismore for this family friendly fiesta, which features all sorts of fun. Celebrate the deceased by visiting the on-site graveyard! Tickets are $7/adults and $3/child.
Heritage Village
The Haunted Village at Heritage Village is loads of slightly frightening fun, from wagon rides to face painting to trick or treating. There’s one more weekend to enjoy the fun: this Friday and Saturday night from 6-10 p.m. (Have your kids’ faces painted with an authentic, Dia de los Muertos skeleton!)
