Blooms on the Bayou at Krohn Conservatory

Well, it’s another January day and guess what? It’s cloudy. If you’ve been in Cincinnati the past few weeks, you know that the sun has apparently gone missing for most of the month. However… I’ve discovered a destination that will cheer you up and bring a little color into your day: Krohn Conservatory’s newest exhibit, Blooms on the Bayou!

My two young children and I have had the pleasure of visiting the past several seasonal shows at Krohn. It’s become one of our favorite places and we all look forward to seeing how the space is transformed. This time around was such a treat! We walked in to discover the room that was last filled with poinsettias and trains was now bursting with bright, colorful flowers, festive beads, masks and tons of Louisiana charm.

Bayou 1

Krohn describes Blooms on the Bayou as featuring the “festive side of the ‘Big Easy’ as well as the eerie, yet enchanting, swampy southern bayou.” Having never traveled to New Orleans, I can now tell you I am anxious to book a trip! The display is a true party from the moment you walk in, while also portraying the laid back side to a culture that is known for things like Mardi Gras and gumbo.

Bayou 2

We always have our favorite sections of the exhibit and this one had to be the water features. My son was quick to find the (fake) alligators and we loved walking back and forth on the narrow bridge, admiring the flowers and the sound of the running water. There are little touches throughout, reminding you where you are visiting, and as with all of Krohn’s shows, there was plenty to explore and discover.

Bayou Collage

Blooms on the Bayou runs now through March 21st (they are closed on Mondays) and also includes several themed events, both family and adult friendly. Be sure to check our their website for more info on happenings like the Fairy Flower Festival and the Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball — and download a coupon for admission here!

A native Cincinnatian, Andrea has experienced life in all four corners of this city. After growing up on the west side, she headed north to attend Miami University, then moved east to Hyde Park and now lives in Northern Kentucky with her family.

When she’s not playing trains and doing the “hot dog dance” as a stay-at-home mom to her two toddlers, Andrea is busy writing for Cincinnati publications and brainstorming ideas for her next children’s book! With a newfound passion for fitness and overall health, she spends a lot of time at her family gym and loves to play outside.

Andrea worked in education for several years and has a special love for children’s literature. She loves showing her children all our city has to offer and enjoys sharing her finds with other parents. Her favorite spots include the Cincinnati Zoo (although she steers clear of the bird house), her local library and any playground.
