Triple Day Birthday Party

Summer is birthday season at our house.

Over the course of ten weeks all five of our birthday are celebrated. Our three kids’ birthdays are only four weeks apart, so instead of having parties three weekends in a row, we decided this year we would have a Triple Day party for all three kids.

The theme for Triple Day was the Olympics.

We had children’s Olympic games like water balloon toss, diving competitions, soccer, bounce house gymnastics, Twister and even kayaking in the pool. We also attempted synchronized swimming. I played a song everyone knew the dance to, The Chicken Dance and children and grown ups in the pool were supposed to do the synchronized dance. The only problem was no one could really hear the music that well, so I just ended up trying to do the chicken dance, in the pool, by myself. Awkward.

We struggled a bit coming up with proper food choices for the Olympic party. One thought we had was serving food from around the world, but we expected a large crowd so that might be hard to pull off. We also considered British food, but after briefly considering bangers and mash for 75 people we settled on Greek inspired Olympic burgers (Feta cheese, red onion and tzatziki sauce) and hot dogs.

We kept kid beverages pretty simple- lemonade, Capri Sun and LOTS of bottled water, but the grown ups were offered beers of the world for sampling.

My favorite part of the party was the cake parade. Each child had an American flag, formed a long line and paraded towards the cake (with the Olympic theme music in the background of course).

It was a great way to spend the afternoon. We watched our kids play with their friends, spent time with our own family and friends and just relaxed and had a good time.

Kids were all smiles as they left the party with gold medals wrapped around their necks.

It’s never too early to plan next year’s party. I wonder what the theme will be?
