Sunday Funday at the Taft Museum

Yesterday we went to the Taft Museum of Art for its 3rd Sunday Fundays program. As the writer behind Cincinnati Parent’s Calendar, I’ve been aware of this program for awhile — and every month I say ‘this is the month!’

Well, November was finally the month — and I’m so glad we went!

Each month (with some exclusions, like holiday-packed December), The Taft Museum of Art hosts 3rd Sunday Fundays, an afternoon of free kids’ crafts and programs. These Fundays often follow a seasonally appropriate theme; yesterday was “Turkeys Fly!”

The kids (and I) all got really into the craft, which was a DIY turkey made from recycled toilet paper rolls, construction paper, googly eyes and feathers. Our mantle is now decorated with Mama “Free Range” Turkey, Julian “Alien” Turkey and Mary “Flat Stanley” Turkey (Harvey and Daddy oversaw the process).

There was also a scavenger hunt where the kids could hunt for birds around the museum — and a juggling show! This is a really fantastic family event — and the best part is that everything on Sundays — admission, all Funday activities and on-site parking — is free.

3rd Sunday Fundays is a great opportunity for kids to get an introduction to the Taft Museum; art museums can be a bit “ambitious” for families with small kids, so it’s nice to have a designated day to take your kids to this renowned Cincinnati museum.

Mark your calendar for the next Funday, which will happen on January 17! The theme is “Heroes Unite!” which promises to be a super-charged afternoon of fun for the whole family.

The Taft Museum of Art is located at 316 Pike St., Cincinnati, OH 45202. It’s open Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. The museum is closed on Mondays and major holidays.
