The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati’s Polkadots: The Cool Kids Musical opened last week and is an inspiring story your family needs to see. Running through March 25th, this new children’s musical is inspired by true events, and teaches lessons of acceptance and understanding with vibrant songs, dialogue and costumes.
Polkadots: The Cool Kids Musical is an inspiration – don’t be a “square” and miss out on this amazing musical the entire family will love!
Playing at The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati’s Red Bank location, Polkadots is influenced by historical events and Civil Rights trailblazers Ruby Bridges and The Little Rock Nine. The story begins with 8 year-old Lily Polkadot moving to the “Squares Only” town of Rockaway. Being the only Polkadot, Lily tries to gain acceptance even though she is bullied and segregated from her peers. But in the end, Sky Square (a shy Square boy) befriends Lily, and together teaches others that our differences make us special, and it’s what’s on the inside that matters.
I, along with two 4th graders, saw Polkadots: The Cool Kids Musical on opening night. The Red Bank theatre is truly one of Cincinnati’s hidden gems. The theatre is very intimate, and allows the audience to see and feel the characters thoughts and feelings. Plus it’s easy for the characters to interact with children and families in the audience.
With a sold out crowd, the performance began with bright colors and lights, and clap-a-long song from Penelope Square. With so much happening on stage, everyone was entertained throughout the performance. Plus, we were learning lessons of tolerance, respect and friendship. Many times throughout the musical, the girls would turn to me and say, “It’s just not right what is happening to Lily” or “You must stand up to bullies”.
The musical ended with an awesome message that change and acceptance just needs to start with one person, or “square”, and to be proud of your uniqueness. Plus, we learned a new dance with the characters interacting with the audience.
And this musical sparked a full discussion during our ride home. My daughter and her friend spoke freely about situations (bullies) that have affected their school and team relationships. Plus, they began talking about today’s society, and how they will make a difference in the future. I am a super proud mom!
I highly recommend this musical for grade school children. Even if they do not understand the musical’s underlining themes, they will understand the difference between right, wrong and friendship. Plus, the Red Bank location does allow food during the performance in case your children need a snack!
