Parenting New Year’s Resolutions

It’s that time of year again – have you made any New Year’s resolutions yet? Here’s a brief list of what I’m hoping to accomplish this year, along with the outcome that is most likely to occur instead.

Get everyone involved in reading books every night, adults included.

At the very least: Check out books from the library and display them on my coffee table, moving the bookmark along every few days to give the impression I’m reading.

Sleep more.

This year, all my kids will get enough sleep. This will be done by enforcing naps on the weekends.

At the very least: I’d like to nap one weekend this year.

Increase cleanliness.

Make sure everyone showers, brushes their teeth and flosses each and every night.

At the very least: Shoot for twice a week. And buy floss.

Eat better.

Buy and prepare healthier meals for my family.

At the very least: Have my kids to cook for themselves, and let them serve whatever they want to one another.

Schedule date nights.

Plan a weekly date night with my wife.

At the very least: Convince my kids to play for fifteen uninterrupted minutes so my wife and I can have an adult conversation while making dinner.

Plan a road trip.

Take a cross-country family road trip, learning about our great country and enjoying time spent together as a family.

At the very least: Drive across town to the grocery store without all of us wanting to kill each other by the time we get there.

Exercise more.

Get the whole family to increase their physical activity, and maybe sign up for a marathon myself.

At the very least: Increase my exercise beyond just chasing after my kids.

There’s my list. We’ll have to wait and see how it goes, but I have a feeling I already know how this story will end. Happy New Year from my family to yours!
