You guys — did you know that this Friday is National Donut Day?! This holiday was created by The Salvation Army back in 1938 to honor the women who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I. These soldiers returned home from the war craving these Salvation Army donuts — and local bakers soon responded to fulfill the demand! Today, Donut Day takes place annually on the first Friday of June.
In honor of this sweet holiday, donut shops across the U.S. are giving away free donuts! Among the national chains, Krispy Kreme and Dunkin’ Donuts are offering free fried treats to customers.
If you’re craving a locally made donut, head to Fountain Square on Friday from 12-1 pm, for FREE treats from the following bakeries:
(And while you’re downtown, walk off those donuts by heading up a few blocks to the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County’s Book Sale — it’s the final day of the sale, which means that for just $10 you can purchase a bag — and everything you fit in it is yours!)
After you and the kids have hit up Fountain Square, continue the festivities at blue manatee. From 4-5 pm, the bookstore is hosting a donut-themed story time and donut-decorating activity for kids ages 5-7. Cost is just $3/kid and you can make a reservation by calling 513-731-2665.
