Doodle Wall

The cold, dark months of winter can be a challenging time to keep kids occupied at home. You’ll no doubt need to be creative to help them get creative! I was inspired by a recent visit to my neighbor’s house, where I discovered a very cool idea. Instead of plastering over a drywall section in their basement, they left it unfinished and encouraged their grandkids to draw and write on it. What started out as a way to entertain youngsters quickly turned into a tradition that continues to this day, when the grandkids (who are big and grown now) come by to visit.

Not only is this a fun activity in the moment; it’s also a family keepsake for down the road. Consider doing this if you have an unfinished basement, or anywhere in your house where you might modify a wall to become an art space. There is chalkboard paint that you can use to cover a wall, or whiteboard/dry erase paint that you can use dry erase markers on (the latter may be best left to older kids who understand which walls are doodle walls and which aren’t!)

If you’re lucky, you’ll see something on the wall that makes you smile or laugh. Or pause and remember. And, maybe, in February, someone will leave you a love note!
