Aglamesis Bros is the Sweetest Spot in Cincinnati!

Aglamesis Bros is the sweetest spot in Cincinnati – and is a treasured piece of our city’s history. In 1908, Thomas and Nicholas Aglamesis, Greek immigrants, opened their first ice cream parlor, The Metropolitan, in Norwood. Years later in 1913, the Oakley location was opened and to this day remains a timeless treasure continuing to create amazing ice cream treats and confectionaries. This July for National Ice Cream Month, take your family to one of the very last original ice cream parlors and experience century-old quality and tradition.

My family are Aglamesis regulars. After an evening out, we love to visit this turn-of-the-century establishment for sundaes and frozen coffees. With a menu offering a variety of flavors and treats, you will never order the same thing twice, unless you’ve found a favorite dessert. I am typically a Hot Fudge Sundae gal, while my daughter enjoys the famous Banana Split and husband savors the old-fashioned Chocolate Malt.

Recently, my family visited the Oakley location for a Sunday afternoon treat. And this time, we had a goal: conquer the French Quarter Bonanza. This sundae includes eight large scoops of ice cream (choose your flavors) basking in crushed Maraschino Cherries, marshmallows, strawberry and chocolate sauces, bananas, whipped cream and nuts. Served in a large elegant glass goblet, this dessert is perfect for 6 to 8 people. But after a morning swim meet, we worked up quite the appetite and were ready to complete this sweet challenge!

As my daughter and I watched the French Quarter Bonanza being made, we were in awe of all the fresh ingredients and the amazing flavor combinations (we chose strawberry, chocolate chip, banana, coffee, vanilla and chocolate).  We hoped our eyes were not bigger than our tummies. And then the Bonanza was placed on our table. It was too beautiful and amazing to eat — it was a culinary masterpiece! But somebody had to eat it… and with three spoons we began our quest.

The French Quarter Bonanza was full of flavors that created a sweet, fruity and downright sinful treat. And I’m are happy to report that only about 1/3 of the sundae was left when we finally had to put the spoons down. We may not have eaten the entire Bonanza, but we tried our hardest and brought the remaining sundae home for a late-night snack.

If ice cream is not your cup of tea (!), Aglamesis Brothers is also famous for their homemade chocolates and candies. And no holiday is complete without serving Aglamesis chocolate to your guests; and the fruity candies and gummies are loved by everyone. And every time we stop in, gummy worms seem to be purchased but never make it home… you just can’t have one!

Aglamesis Brothers has two locations in Cincinnati: Oakley Square and Montgomery Square Shopping Centre. This July, make sure your family spends some time at the sweetest spot in Cincinnati.
